Yiquan Park's Living Master

1

Zhang Yongmou, Yiquan expert, fourth-generation Yiquan inheritor, was born in Jingyang, Shaanxi in 1972. Jingyang was one of the most famous “Martial Art Towns” in China. By the age of 22, Zhang had trained three styles of martial arts (Hongquan/陕西红拳, Xingyiquan/形意拳and Sanda/散打) for over 10 years, which laid solid basic skills for his later martial art development.

2

In 1994, Zhang began working in Beijing, where he met his first Yiquan teacher, Master Yao Chengrong, son of Master Yao Zongxun, the formal successor of Master Wang Xiangzhai (the founder of Yiquan). Yao family is especially professionalized on Yiquan combat skills. A strong interest in Yiquan made Zhang stop other martial art training and focus only on Yiquan from then on.

After Master Yao’s in-depth teaching, Zhang discovered that Yiquan could reform the human body, develop human potential, and excite human instincts, through which one can develop exquisite combat ability, worth a lifetime to learn. After ten years of hard work on Yiquan study, Zhang achieved great success in his combat ability, attending many boxing matches and winning many medals.

However, Zhang did not know so much about the health effect of Yiquan, to be precise, Zhanzhuang, until 2006, when he met his second Yiquan teacher, Master Yu Yongnian, who trained directly with Master Wang Xiangzhai for over 20 years. Master Yu was a medical professional who used Zhanzhuang to cure his patients for 30 years and practiced and conducted research on Zhanzhuang for 60 years. After 3 years’ learning with Master Yu, Zhang had become proficient in Yiquan’s health preservation skills. The health aspect of training helped Zhang greatly develop his combat skills.

4

After studying Yiquan for 20 years, proficient in both Yiquan’s combat and health techniques, Zhang founded his own Yiquan school in Xi’an in 2007. Based on Yao’s traditional Yiquan teaching method and Yu’s modern Zhanzhuang health-preservation teaching method, Zhang developed a new martial art training system, putting forward the concept of “Yiquan martial art training as a healthy lifestyle,” integrating philosophical thinking into both his health-oriented and combat-oriented students.

14 years have passed since Zhang founded his Yiquan school, and more than 1000 health-oriented students have benefited from Zhang’s Zhanzhuang teaching method. Students who suffered from chronic problems were cured or recovered to a great extent through this particular Zhanzhuang practice. Students who had been fairly healthy got stronger and developed self-defense skills through Zhanzhuang and Yiquan training.

Zhang has also taken nearly 30 disciples, most of whom are combat-oriented students. Those students have attended pushing-hands and boxing matches, bringing medals and honors to the school.

Song Gao became Zhang’s fifth disciple in 2016. Song inherited his master’s successful experience in combining health and combat techniques in Yiquan training, and began teaching through Yiquan Park Online Wuguan program in 2021. In this program, Yiquan & Zhanzhuang is being promoted as a sports therapy, a self-defense method, a philosophical pursuit, and a way of life. The program is only held online at this moment due to Covid travel restrictions. Song is planning on traveling to the west to provide hands-on instruction in the future.

is not only standing still. It is not only meditation, either. The system of   training is a combination of physical and mental aspects. The physical and mental activities are not separate from each other in this exercise. Hence, both the physiological and psychological functions of the body are cumulatively strengthened. Why   heals is a huge topic. Dr. Yu had written many books about it. In this article, we are going to focus on how   is able to nourish the blood. We will talk more in our blog posts.

During  , the body is held relatively unchanged in correct structures and there is constant contraction and loosening between muscles and bones. This will mobilize blood vessels, which promotes blood circulation. Dr. Yu listed the following figures in the book of “  and Search of Wu” (Yu Yongnian, 2005, Shanxi Science and Technology Press).

After one hour of   the composition of the blood may sensibly change:

  1. up to 1520 000 additional erythrocytes (red blood cells) per cm3 of blood,
  2. up to 3650 additional hem leukocytes (white blood cells) per cm3 of blood,
  3. up to 3.2 gram of additional hemoglobin per cm3 of blood.

Red blood cells are able to carry oxygen so efficiently because of the hemoglobin they contain. Increase of hemoglobin can directly impact the quantity of oxygen. With this additional amount of oxygen brought to the organ systems, one will be in a special state of relaxation and wellbeing.  This is why   has particularly good results in treating neurasthenia, arthritis, angina, cirrhosis, cardiovascular diseases, etc.
